Texas Woman Says Ortho Evra® Caused Miscarriage and Blood Clots

Ortho Evra® is being blamed as the cause of a miscarriage and dangerous blood clots by a Texas woman, who recently filed a federal lawsuit against the drug maker Johnson & Johnson.

The Ortho Evra® birth control patch caused chest pains and breathing difficulties according to Elizabeth Barroso who only used it for three weeks in 2004. Barroso spent eight days in the hospital, where doctors treated her for blood clots in her lungs.

Barroso after release from the hospital was prescribed blood thinners. She later became pregnant in October of 2004, but suffered a miscarriage. When she became pregnant in 2005, Barroso was forced to use blood thinners to prevent another miscarriage. Due to her injuries from Ortho Evra®, all of Barroso's future pregnancies will carry a risk of miscarriage.

This Ortho Evra® lawsuit is the latest of many against Johnson & Johnson, which earlier this year settled other Ortho Evra® cases.

The Ortho Evra® compliant says the package insert that came with the Ortho Evra® patch was misleading and deceptive. The insert suggests the risk of blood clots among Ortho Evra® users is equivalent to that of women using birth control pills.

From 2002 to 2004 there have been 27,974 adverse events among Ortho Evra® users.
