Ortho Evra® - Breast Cancer
Numerous studies give conflicting reports on the relationship between breast cancer and Ortho Evra® use. The risk of having breast cancer diagnosed may be slightly increased among users of the Ortho Evra® birth control patch and other oral contraceptives. However, this excess risk appears to decrease over time after discontinuation of Ortho Evra® or any other hormonal birth control. Some studies have found a small increase in risk for women who first use Ortho Evra® or other hormonal birth control before age 20.
Ortho Evra® and other hormonal contraceptives should not be used by women who currently have or have had breast cancer because breast cancer is usually a hormonally sensitive tumor. If you use Ortho Evra® you should have regular breast examinations by a health care professional and examine your own breasts monthly.
Ortho Evra® - Reproductive Cancer
Some studies suggest an increase in cancer of the cervix in women who use the Ortho Evra® patch or oral contraceptives for long periods of time. At this time, there is insufficient evidence to rule out the possibility that Ortho Evra® and oral contraceptives may cause such cancers.
