Back to Ortho Evra® Side Effects Main Page
Ortho Evra®, the birth control patch, is linked to damaging blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in young women. In 2005 the Associated Press (AP) published that users of the Ortho Evra® patch are three times more likely to developing a blood clot, deep vein thrombosis, or other serious side effects compared to users of the birth control pill.
Ortho Evra® has been reported by the the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to possibly cause the development of deep vein thrombosis symptoms and death as a result of the DVT. Deep vein thrombosis can lead to a life threatening pulmonary embolism, when the blood clot moves from the legs to the lungs and obstructs blood flow to areas of the lungs.
Ortho Evra® patients are at an increased risk of developing pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The increased hormones in the Ortho Evra® birth control patch may promote the formation of blood clots, which may then cause deep vein thrombosis and a pulmonary embolism.
Deep vein thrombosis is the development of a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs, pelvis, or arms. Blood clots can develop in superficial and deep veins. Clots in superficial veins rarely cause serious problems, while clots in deep veins require immediate medical attention.
Deep vein thrombosis may also cause other long-term complications such as long-lasting postthrombotic syndrome which causes pain, swelling, discoloration, and leg sores.
Ortho Evra® symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include, but are not limited to:
- Swelling of leg or arm
- Affected leg or arm is redder in color
- Affected leg or arm is warmer in temperature
- Pain
- Tenderness
- Leg or arm sores
- Postthrombotic syndrome
