Back to Ortho Evra® Side Effects Main Page

Ortho Evra® and other hormonal contraception may cause fluid retention (edema) and may raise your blood pressure. An increase in blood pressure has been reported in women taking Ortho Evra® and is more likely in occur in older users and with extended use.

Women with significant hypertension should not use the Ortho Evra® birth control patch or any other hormonal contraception. Women with a history of hypertension or renal disease should be encouraged to use other methods of birth control. If women elect to use Ortho Evra®, they should be monitored closely and use should be discontinued with signs of elevated blood pressure. For most women, elevated blood pressure will return to normal after stopping Ortho Evra® use.
