Ortho Evra® birth control patch studies have reported an increased lifetime relative risk of gallbladder disease in users of the patch and other hormonal contraceptives. However, more recent studies have shown that the relative risk of developing gallbladder disease among Ortho Evra® users may be minimal. The recent findings of minimal risk may be related to the use of lower hormonal doses in Ortho Evra® and other hormonal contraception.
Ortho Evra® and other hormonal contraceptives may worsen existing gallbladder disease and may accelerate the development of the disease in previously asymptomatic women.
