Ortho Evra® - Pulmonary Embolism Risks

Ortho Evra®, in 2005, had Johnson & Johnson and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issue warnings about the Ortho Evra® birth control patch causing an increased rate of blood clots compared to traditional birth control pills. Women using the Ortho Evra® patch also have an increased risk of developing a pulmonary embolism which is a blood clot that passes from smaller blood vessels in the legs, pelvis, arms, or heart to the lungs.

Ortho Evra® records at the FDA records show that women using the Ortho Evra® patch are three times more likely then women using birth control pills to die or develop nonfatal blood clots. The records also show that of the 23 cases in which death was the outcome, 17 appeared to be related to blood clots.

Ortho Evra® use has shown to increase the risk of developing a pulmonary embolism in it's patients. Ortho Evra® users are exposed to 60 percent more estrogen compared to birth control pill users, which may promote the formation of blood clots that could cause a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism occurs when the blood clot passes through the vessels of the lung continuing to reach smaller vessels until it becomes lodged in a vessel that is too small to allow it move elsewhere. The blood clot gets wedged and prevents any further blood from traveling to that area of the lung.

Ortho Evra® use and a variety of factors that may make someone more likely to develop a pulmonary embolism includes, but is not limited to:

  • Immobilization - confinement to bed may cause a blood clot formation to occur in either the arms or legs
  • Travel - sitting in an airplane or a car for long periods of time allows the blood to sit in the legs and increases the risk of clot formation
  • Obesity
  • Trauma or injury to the legs
  • Burn Injury
  • Previous history of blood clots or Pulmonary embolism
  • Heart disease
